Governor Chafee Orders U.S. and State Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff in Honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day



President Barack Obama has proclaimed May 15, 2013, Peace Officers Memorial Day and has ordered the flag of the United States to be flown at half-staff during the course of that day. Accordingly, Governor Lincoln Chafee has ordered that, in addition to the flag of the United States, the Rhode Island flag fly at half-staff on all public buildings and grounds across the state on Wednesday, May 15.

Governor Lincoln Chafee Orders U.S. and State Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff Following the Boston Marathon Bombings

As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on April 15, 2013 in Boston, Massachusetts, President Barack Obama has ordered that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, April 20, 2013.
Accordingly, Governor Lincoln D. Chafee has ordered that, in addition to the flag of the United States, the Rhode Island flag fly at half-staff on all public buildings in the State of Rhode Island until that time.

Flags May be Raised Following the Funeral of Former Secretary of State Barbara M. Leonard

Following Secretary Leonard’s funeral services today, per the Governor’s directive below, Rhode Island flags may be returned to full-staff tomorrow morning, Wednesday, January 30, 2013.

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee Orders Rhode Island Flags to Half-Staff to Honor the Memory of Barbara M. Leonard


To honor the memory of former Rhode Island Secretary of State Barbara M. Leonard, Governor Lincoln D. Chafee has ordered all Rhode Island flags across the state to half-staff until Secretary Leonard is laid to rest.

Governor Chafee’s order applies to state flags on all public buildings in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

This afternoon, President Barack Obama, as a mark of respect for the memory of Senator Daniel Inouye, ordered U.S. flags on all public buildings and grounds to half-staff until sunset on the day of his interment. Accordingly, Governor Lincoln Chafee has ordered Rhode Island flags on public buildings and grounds across the state to remain at half-staff until that time. An updated notice will be distributed when the details of Senator Inouye’s interment become known.

As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut, President Barack Obama has ordered that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, December 18, 2012.

Accordingly, Governor Lincoln D. Chafee has ordered that, in addition to the flag of the United States, the Rhode Island flag fly at half-staff on all public buildings in the State of Rhode Island until that time.
