On February 20, Governor Chafee congratulated the Rhode Island Rally for Recovery for being selected as the 2013 National Hub Event. Rally for Recovery events, held in September of each year, are part of National Recovery Month, an initiative of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, within the Department of Health and Human Services. The event will raise awareness about drug and alcohol addiction, mental illness, developmental disabilities, and the road to recovery.
Governor Chafee commended the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (BHDDH), the Anchor Recovery Center, RICARES, and other members of the Rhode Island Recovery Month coalition on their achievement.
“This designation recognizes your hard work and commitment to supporting people in recovery from substance abuse and mental health issues throughout the state, as well as their families,” Governor Chafee said.
Next year, Rhode Island will join a select few states that have held Hub Events, including Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Rhode Island Rally for Recovery, started in 2003, has steadily grown each year to include over 4,000 participants in 2011.
“On behalf of all Rhode Islanders, I thank you for your exceptional dedication and your unwavering commitment to serving this population,” Governor Chafee concluded.
Rhode Island’s Rally will be web streamed, and A&E will broadcast it throughout the United States as the National Hub event. The program will include nationally-recognized speakers from the White House. Rhode Island Rally for Recovery will also be a co-sponsor of Providence’s Waterfire, which it has done for several years.
